which sieve designation is used for zone Identification and why ?
If you look at table of zone for sand you will find that only 600 micron sieve range don’t have any over lap which help us to identify zone
600 micron passing percentage are as below
Zone 1 15- 34
Zone 2. 35 - 59
Zone 3 60 - 79
Zone 4. 80 - 100
We always prefer zone two and three sand or fine aggregate for concrete zone one and four shows non graded aggregate.
Practically in case of artificial or crushed sand it is possible to maintain zone two or three gradation of crushed sand.
We observe that there is change in % of passing through 600 micron sieve with different lot of crises or natural sand. So it is better to check 600 micron passing % and make slight changes to laboratory mix desgin in accordance with lab sieve analysis and site sieve analysis results.
